Some of the pieces that were cool for teens in the 1980s are cool again today.
Here's how to wear them for 2008:
Keep things age-appropriate. "Hannah Montana" costume designer Dahlia Foroutan recommends a tiered miniskirt and a top with volume, such as a puffy-sleeve shirt, and a wide belt. No high heels, she says, but ballet flats and Converse sneakers would look great. And some '80s styles were too mature for teens -- big shoulders and high necklines -- even though girls wore them, Foroutan notes. In 2008, you'd be well advised to tone down some of that or risk looking more "Working Girl" than modern girl.
A look from the ages is not necessarily for all ages.Foroutan warns you at least need a youthful spirit to pull off any of the looks. Without setting a hard age limit, you should take a second look in the mirror if you were old enough to wear to class a "Frankie Says Relax" T-shirt.
Don't be so literal. Even fashion designers struggle with the right balance when it comes to revisiting this decade. Baume's advice: "Always mix it with something classic, which is the unexpected. Don't put '80s with '80s. Put it with something prim and proper, or preppy."
